Nursing Homes- Home Care Services vs. Nursing Homes for Elderly People

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

When it comes to nursing homes and elderly home care services, there are a lot of similarities. However, there are also many differences between these two programs designed to help older people who just can’t live on their own completely anymore. Home care services are effective when a senior citizen is still able to live independently and just needs someone to check in on them from time to time. These services are also ideal for capable adults who simply do not wish to leave their home and enter a nursing home or assisted living facility.

Nursing homes are typically stale environments that don’t allow people to have the space and independence that they deserve. Of course, there are a variety of assisted living facilities that offer an intermediary between home care services and nursing homes, but they are still not appropriate for everyone. Basically, you can expect the following with nursing homes and in home care services:

Nursing Homes:

-24-hour care

-Medication monitoring

-Medical care

-Therapy

-Daily assistance with tasks and living

-Meals

-Activities

-Personalized care as often as needed, up to 24 hours

-Medication monitoring and dispensing

-Therapy services

-Help with daily tasks and activities

-Meals and housekeeping services

As you can see, a nursing home and home care service can offer a lot of the same benefits to elderly people who need a little help. However, the most basic difference is that home care is ideal for people who can still get by on their own without constant medical support or treatments while nursing homes are the right place for people who need 24 hour care, including medical care, and who cannot completely function on their own anymore.

It’s never an easy choice to determine what type of services you want for your loved ones, but you have to do what is best for them. A nursing home is usually the last opportunity for an elderly person to enjoy the rest of their life, but it can be a good place contrary to popular belief. In-home care, on the other hand, is seen as more of an intermediate step in helping elderly people remain independent and in their own homes. Whenever you are going to choose one of these services for your loved ones, it is important that you take the time to do the research and find the best solution for the person in question.

Video captures home health aide beating elderly woman

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

A New Jersey woman placed a camera in the room of her 91-year-old mother so that family members could see her, but what was caught on camera has shocked the family and led to an arrest. The footage shows a home health aide beating the 91-year-old woman, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. The health aide, 52-year-old Carmen Pereira, was charged with aggravated assault and other charges related to what was captured on the video footage, said Mike Post, a detective from the Jersey City Police Department. In the footage, the aide is seen tending to the elderly woman, forcefully brushing her teeth or putting her in bed by picking her up and slamming her down. The video also shows the aide repeatedly slapping the woman and yanking her hair. Pereira was arrested September 2. Along with aggravated assault, she faces charges of endangering the welfare of an elderly person and neglect of an incompetent person, Post said.
